The Rams first season under new head coach Scott Linehan comes with some interesting, yet difficult matchups. And there will be no easing into this year’s schedule.

One year after having one of the easiest schedules (based on opponents’ records), the Rams will get few breaks this year. They kick off the season on Sept. 10 against Denver at the Edward Jones Dome. The Broncos, of course, are coming off a 13-3 season in which they advanced to the AFC Championship game.

"Opening at home is nice," coach Scott Linehan said. "It’s going to be exciting for all of us with a new era here. It’s a tough challenge obviously playing a team of that caliber in the opener."

But there are plenty of other highlights on the schedule that should make for some interesting drama. Included in the schedule is a series of west coast stops with games in San Diego and Oakland in addition to the usual stops in Arizona, San Francisco and Seattle. In addition to the west coast travel, the Rams will be reunited with familiar faces in almost every game along the way.

"I think that's probably the league now," Linehan said. "I think everybody has probably got people they are going to be playing against that they were playing with. It's the business. It's a different team, they have a different colored jersey. There's nothing there that is too overly personal for me."

St. Louis has just one primetime game with a Monday Night Football matchup against the Bears on Dec. 11. That game will bring former Rams defensive coordinator and current Bears head coach Lovie Smith back to St. Louis.

One particularly interesting pair of games comes in weeks three and four. After the opener with Denver, the Rams travel to San Francisco the following week. In week three, St. Louis will get its first look at Arizona’s new stadium, new running back Edgerrin James and, of course, another meeting with quarterback Kurt Warner. That game is set for Sept. 24.

The following week, on Oct. 1, Mike Martz will make his return to St. Louis as the offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions. The following week, the Rams will travel to Lambeau Field for what could be a part of quarterback Brett Favre’s final NFL season. The Rams will also get to see defensive tackle Ryan Pickett in a Green Bay uniform for the first time.

On Oct. 15, the Rams will get their first look of the season at the defending NFC champions when Seattle comes to St. Louis for a noon kickoff. The Seahawks finally got over the hump last year, beating the Rams a pair of times before marching through the NFC playoffs.

While Seattle hasn’t added any former Rams this year, it has made some big moves in the offseason including the addition of former 49ers linebacker Julian Peterson and Minnesota receiver Nate Burleson. The teams will reconvene in Seattle on Nov. 12.

The Rams’ bye week comes two weeks earlier this year with the week of Oct. 22 serving as the team’s time off.

After the bye, the Rams get back into action with games against a pair of NFC West opponents. They travel to San Diego for an Oct. 29 meeting against the Chargers and follow that with a home game against Trent Green and Kansas City on Nov. 5.

Following the trip to Seattle on Nov. 12, things don’t get much easier with a trip to Carolina, a team expected to contend once again for the NFC crown. That game is set for Nov. 19.

The NFC West battles pick up again the following week with home games against San Francisco (Nov. 26) and Arizona (Dec. 3) leading into the aforementioned Monday night matchup against Chicago.

As the holiday season nears, the Rams hit the road to complete their west coast swing with a trip to Oakland on Dec. 17. And, for the second year in a row, the Rams will be home for Christmas with the return of safety Adam Archuleta and the Washington Redskins for a Christmas Eve battle at the Edward Jones Dome.

St. Louis closes the season on New Year’s Eve with a trip to Minnesota.

While the Rams only have one scheduled primetime game (the Dec. 11 game against the Bears), the possibility remains for more evening matchups depending on how the Rams fare in the first nine weeks of the season.

The NFL announced Wednesday that it has added flexible scheduling for its Sunday Night telecasts on NBC. All games scheduled for Sundays from weeks 10-15 and week 17 are currently scheduled as day games with no matchups set for the NBC broadcasts.

Those games will be announced within 12 days of the scheduled dates for weeks 10-15 and within six days of the week 17 date (Dec. 31). The reason for the delayed and flexible scheduling is to get more appealing (read: games with potential playoff implications) matchups into the primetime spots.

"You don't like to be thrown out of your routine by nature," Linehan said. "But it's for the benefit and good of the league. It's great for the fans. I think it's a great addition but we as coaches are used to adjusting. If you get a different schedule, that's a good thing. That means you are doing well and people want you on national TV. If we have to adjust our schedule then we are not going to be complaining."

Based on opponents winning percentage from last season, the Rams schedule comes in in a tie for the 15th toughest in the league. Rams’ opponents were 130-126 a year ago.

The team also finalized its preseason schedule Thursday. The Rams' second preseason game has been set for Aug. 19 with a 7 p.m. start against the Texans at the Edward Jones Dome. The trip to Miami in the preseason was also finalized with a 6:30 p.m. start on Aug. 31. The team previously released the starts for the games at Kansas City and at home against Indianapolis.

The trips to Miami and Minnesota will be a sort of homecoming for Linehan, who spent time in both places as the offensive coordinator.
